Al's Drum School has been delivering Trinity College London Drum Kit exams, in both Classical and Jazz and Rock & Pop styles, for a couple of years now. This year they were successful in their application to become a Trinity Champion Centre, where they highlighted just how our assessments complement their approach to music education. In this blog, they share exactly what becoming a Trinity Champion Centre means to them.

At Al’s Drum School, we’ve always believed that music education should inspire, challenge and unlock potential. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to have been recognised as a Trinity Champion Centre - an honour that validates our approach and strengthens our mission to provide high-quality, student-centred drum tuition.

But this recognition isn’t just about status—it’s about impact.

A Rhythm With Purpose

One of the most powerful tools we use in our teaching is the Trinity College London exam framework. While we pride ourselves on creating an engaging and flexible environment for our students, we’ve found that introducing Trinity exams has provided a welcome sense of structure, focus and progression - without compromising creativity.

For many of our students, having a tangible goal to work towards gives their drumming purpose. Whether it’s a beginner aiming for their first Grade 1 or a more experienced player working through the higher grades, Trinity’s approach allows students to chart their journey with confidence. The exams are challenging, yes - but they’re also accessible, fair, and rewarding. The repertoire is modern and diverse, and the technical requirements feel relevant to real musicianship, not just
exam-day performance.

More Than Just a Grade

What we value most is the way Trinity exams amplify the learning experience:

• Focus: Students practise more effectively when they know what they’re aiming for. They listen more, reflect more, and become more intentional in their playing.

• Confidence: The sense of achievement when completing a grade builds belief - not just in drumming, but across life’s other disciplines.

• Progression: The exam structure offers a clear, motivating path forward, which helps both students and tutors align expectations and celebrate milestones.

We’ve embedded Trinity exams into our offering as an optional but encouraged route. Some students prefer to play purely for joy - and that’s totally fine. But for those who want to push themselves, the exam process is a brilliant motivator.

Becoming a Trinity Champion Centre

Being recognised as a Trinity Champion Centre has brought a great deal of pride to our drum school. It affirms that we’re doing more than just teaching drum parts - we’re nurturing well-rounded musicians, and helping young people develop skills that go far beyond the kit.

It’s also introduced us to a wider network of like-minded educators, all passionate about high-quality music education. We look forward to sharing insights, learning from others, and contributing to the Champion Centre community in any way we can.

Ultimately, Trinity exams are not the end goal at Al’s Drum School - they’re part of a broader musical journey. A journey that’s unique to every student, but one that now carries the additional support, recognition and opportunity that comes with being a Trinity Champion Centre.

To our students and parents: thank you for trusting us. And to Trinity: thank you for the recognition.

Here’s to many more years of rhythm, progress, and inspired learning!
