Just sing: confidence, community and why we love being a Trinity Champion Centre

For many students, achieving their Trinity College London Music qualification provides the recognition and reward they covet after months of hard work and perseverance. But what if taking the exam was just part of the puzzle? What if the time spent learning and refining their pieces wasn’t only about the performance given in the exam room but part of a wider celebration of musical achievement? Claire Willmer, Founder of Voices of Darlington, shares exactly how they achieve this through their special event, Just Sing, with support from Trinity, as one of our Champion Centres.
At Voices of Darlington, we believe everyone has a voice, and that voice deserves to be heard, celebrated, and nurtured. Whether someone is 6 or 66, brand new to singing or coming back after a lifetime away, we’ve seen first-hand how music builds confidence, connection, and courage.
We’re so proud to be a Trinity Champion Centre, because Trinity’s approach to exams matches everything we believe in: flexibility, creativity, and inclusion. That partnership came to life in the most incredible way this summer when almost 200 of our singers took over Darlington Hippodrome for a one-night-only spectacular: Just Sing.
And wow… what a night!
From lessons to the limelight
Many of our private students who took the stage that night had developed their skills through Trinity College London exams. Whether they were working on storytelling, vocal technique, or performance confidence, their hard work and dedication truly shone under the lights.
Some of those amazing soloists were only able to access lessons and exams thanks to Trinity’s Music & Drama Access Fund – and that support changed everything. It gave them the chance, not just to take part, but to thrive. They weren’t just singing songs – they were standing in their power.
Meet The Hive
One of the most magical moments of the concert came from a group very close to our hearts: The Hive – our group of adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities, who we deliver twice-weekly music sessions to.
Through the Sounds of Intent framework and Trinity’s Awards & Certificates in Musical Development, these performers had the chance to achieve something deeply personal and totally joyful. They got up on that stage and showed the world exactly who they are – and the theatre erupted in applause. It was powerful, moving, and unforgettable. The moment they were given the same spotlight as everyone else, and they absolutely owned it.
More than a show
As if the music wasn’t enough, Just Sing also raised over £1,000 for the NSPCC – a cause we care deeply about. To show our students, especially our younger ones, that their talents can be used to help others made the night even more special.
We’re also incredibly grateful for the Trinity Champion Centre grant, which supported the lead-up to the show – helping us offer rehearsals, licensed chaperones, mentoring and resources to make sure everyone who wanted to take part, could. And they even sent us some Trinity merch to give away!
Why Trinity works for us
Trinity exams feel personal, not pressured. They’re structured, but flexible. And for us, the digital offer has been a total game-changer.
My favourite part of being a Trinity exam centre is the flexibility in how and when we submit an exam. That freedom gives us the space, patience, and understanding that many students need in order to thrive. Deadlines can feel daunting – especially for learners with anxiety or additional needs – but Trinity’s digital option means we can film exams in the comfort of our usual lesson space, with a familiar teacher, at a time that suits the student. That’s the biggest win for me.
To truly learn and perform at our best and most confident, our brains need to feel safe – and Trinity have hit the nail on the head with their approach.
Our team's biggest tips for exam success
Over the years, we’ve picked up a few gems when it comes to making the Trinity journey joyful, supportive and effective:
1. Let the performer lead
Our biggest wins always come from asking the student:
- What do you want to achieve?
- How do you see yourself now as a performer and where do you want to go next?
When we take time to understand their identity, we find out what makes their eyes light up. Then we can explore the amazing range of Trinity exam routes and tailor something just for them. When the training and the goal match the person, that’s when the learning sticks.
2. Make the exam part of a bigger journey
The exam isn’t the finish line – it’s just a step along the way. Encourage your student to reflect on everything they’ve learned and achieved so far. Celebrate the effort, the growth, the courage. One of our biggest lessons as a team? Effort matters more than the mark.
3. Celebrate everything
Grade 1? Distinction? Showing up for the exam at all? It’s all a big deal. Confidence grows when we stop and acknowledge every success – no matter how small it might seem.
4. Use the digital option to create calm
Being able to record exams in a familiar space with a trusted teacher makes a huge difference – especially for anxious learners or those who need a bit more time to feel ready. It’s calm. It’s safe. It works.
5. Keep it kind
Be honest. Be encouraging. And most of all – be specific. Never assume a student knows what they’re doing well. Tell them. List it. Every single lesson. Clear, positive feedback with small, negotiated tasks to work on week on week builds trust and helps them hold on to their strengths – even on tough days.
Final thoughts
Just Sing wasn’t just a concert – it was a celebration of everything we believe in: resilience, creativity, kindness, and community.
Thanks to Trinity, our singers had the tools, the structure, and the space to grow in their own unique ways – and they came together to create something truly unforgettable.
We’re proud to be a Trinity Champion Centre. But more than that, we’re proud of every singer who now knows what it feels like to find their voice… and share it with the world.
