As Founder and Director of The Avenue Arts Academy, Siobhan McAllister has seen first-hand how Trinity College London drama exams help young people develop far more than performance skills. A proud Trinity Champion Centre, the academy enters candidates for Trinity qualifications from their first exams through to advanced levels. Echoing many of the themes of Trinity College London's recent white paper, Career-Ready: Bridging the Employability Skills and Confidence Gap, Siobhan explores how the Trinity journey builds confidence, resilience and communication skills that benefit young people long after the exam is over.
At The Avenue Arts Academy, we have always believed that performing arts education is about much more than learning lines, preparing a piece or stepping onto a stage. It is about helping young people find their voice, develop self-belief and grow into confident communicators. That is one of the many reasons we are so proud of our relationship with Trinity College London.
Through preparing our children and young people for Trinity exams, we have seen first-hand that the value of the experience goes far beyond the final result. Achieving a recognised qualification is an important moment for every student, but the journey towards that achievement is often where the greatest personal development takes place.
Building confidence through structure
Trinity exams provide our students with a clear and structured goal. They understand what they are working towards, what is expected of them and how they can improve. This gives them a sense of direction and helps them recognise their progress over time.
Confidence does not simply appear on the day of an exam. It grows through preparation, regular practice, constructive feedback and the determination to keep developing. By working towards a defined goal, students learn to prepare carefully, take responsibility for their work and trust in what they have achieved.
The feedback provided by Trinity is clear, constructive and easy to follow. It gives our teachers a strong platform from which to recognise achievement, identify areas for development and provide focused support. It also helps our students understand that feedback is not simply about a final mark but is an important part of their ongoing learning.
Our staff guide the students through each stage of the process, encouraging them to understand that achievement rarely comes from one single moment. It is built through all the smaller moments of effort, practice, feedback and improvement along the way.
Finding their voice
One of the most important changes we see through Trinity exam preparation is the development of confident communication. Students learn how to stand in front of others, present their work and express their ideas clearly. They learn to use their voice with purpose, hold someone’s attention and trust in their own ability.
For many children, performing individually can initially feel daunting. Entering an exam room, introducing themselves and presenting their work requires courage. With careful preparation and the support of our teaching team, we watch those same children become increasingly comfortable, assured and independent.
Our staff understand that every child develops differently. They know when to encourage, when to challenge and when a young person needs reassurance. They create an environment in which students feel able to take risks, make mistakes and learn from them.
Through this process, students learn to manage their nerves, remain focused under pressure and continue even when something does not go exactly as planned. A child who once struggled to speak loudly enough can begin to project clearly, while a student who was nervous about performing alone can learn to take ownership of the space and have confidence in their preparation.
Working independently and as part of a team
An important part of our Trinity provision is that students have opportunities to take part in group examinations as well as individual assessments. This means they develop confidence not only as solo performers, but also as members of a team.
Working towards a group examination requires students to listen, collaborate and take responsibility for their contribution to a shared performance. They learn that the success of the group depends on everyone arriving prepared, remaining focused and supporting the people around them.
These are vital transferable skills. Whether our students move into the performing arts, education, business or another profession, they will need to work alongside others. They will need to communicate, listen, compromise, contribute their ideas and understand how their individual role supports a wider goal.
Group examinations allow them to experience this in a practical way. They learn when to take the lead, when to listen and how to contribute confidently while remaining aware of the wider team.
Skills they will carry into the future
We know that not every young person who attends The Avenue Arts Academy will pursue a career in the performing arts, but that does not lessen the value of their Trinity experience.
The ability to stand in front of others and communicate effectively is a genuine life skill. It can support a young person in the classroom, during a presentation, at an interview, in an audition or when sharing an idea in the workplace.
Through their Trinity journey, our students also develop discipline, commitment and resilience. They learn that progress requires regular effort and that improvement comes from listening, reflecting and responding positively to feedback. They develop creativity by interpreting material and making their own choices, alongside emotional awareness through exploring different characters, situations and perspectives.
Perhaps most importantly, they develop self-belief. Completing a Trinity exam gives a young person clear evidence of what they can achieve through preparation and hard work, giving them greater confidence to approach their next challenge.
Our Trinity delivery includes Group and Solo Musical Theatre grade exams, as well as progression to the ATCL Level 4 Diploma. This gives our students opportunities to develop through different styles and levels of assessment, from their earliest examinations through to advanced qualifications.
The confidence to take the next step
At The Avenue Arts Academy, we are incredibly proud of our students’ examination results, but we are equally proud of the personal journeys behind them. For one student, success may mean achieving a Distinction. For another, it may mean managing their nerves, entering the exam room independently or contributing confidently as part of a group.
For us, Trinity is about much more than a final mark or certificate. It gives young people a clear goal, a recognised achievement and the confidence to take their next step. They leave with stronger communication skills, greater resilience, experience of working independently and as part of a team, and a deeper belief in their own abilities.
That is what makes the Trinity experience so valuable to us. It helps us develop confident, creative and capable young people who are ready to communicate, collaborate and contribute wherever their future may lead.
