It's a new year and with it comes a revised syllabus for our Brass teachers and candidates to explore. Here's what you can expect from the 2024 Brass syllabus:

New repertoire for trumpet, trombone and French horn

In addition to new pieces for trumpet, trombone and French horn, all existing repertoire remains valid, including those featured in the Trumpet 2019 books.

No end date

As with our other recent syllabus launches, the 2024 Brass syllabus will operate without an end date. This means that all of the repertoire and exercises listed will remain valid indefinitely* but added to periodically, providing candidates with an ever-increasing range of options to choose from.

*copyright and territory dependent

All-in-one syllabus format

The new Brass syllabus contains all of the information necessary to take a Trinity exam regardless of whether it is taken face-to-face or digitally. Those preparing for digital exams will find details of both Repertoire-only and Technical pathways (including technical work requirements at each grade) and the filming guidelines enclosed.

A more flexible syllabus

A number of improvements have been made to the Brass syllabus with this release:

  • Backing tracks are now permitted for duets in both face-to-face and digital exams
  • Duet parts can be played on any brass instrument
  • Instrumental backing tracks are now permitted for pieces instead of live accompaniment in face-to-face (Initial - Grade 3) and digital (Initial - Grade 8) exams**
  • Updated guidance on the use of starter instruments such as Kinder horns
  • Updated guidance on own composition
  • The requirement to play pieces by different composers has been removed.

**Accompanying parts must not double the solo line

Revisions to Technical Work requirements

A few revisions have also been made to the Technical Work section, including:

  • The removal of the compulsory chromatic scale at Grades 6-8
  • The removal of the crabwise scale at Grade 8
  • The number of sections in the Brass Band Extracts have been reduced.

There have been no changes to the technical work requirements for Initial - Grade 5 exams.
